The Situation in Bosnia for Stray Dogs

Bosnia’s stray crisis reflects deeper issues: corruption, poor healthcare, and weak law enforcement. Though euthanasia of stray dogs is illegal, lack of enforcement and political manipulation worsen the situation.

Economic struggles and limited spaying/neutering add to the problem. With no government support, we rely on donations from compassionate individuals to keep going.

Despite these challenges, we’ve seen incredible transformations, and with your support, we can continue to bring hope to Sarajevo’s Strays.

Our Vision

We dream of a world where every animal is treated with love and respect. In Bosnia, many animals suffer due to neglect and systemic failures. Our goal is to raise awareness, advocate for better policies, and promote responsible pet ownership.

We aim to bridge the gap between animal lovers and those indifferent or fearful, fostering a community of compassion.

Our Team at Friends of Sarajevo's Strays

Our work is powered by volunteers, a devoted community of people who share our mission to bring hope and a second chance to Sarajevo’s forgotten strays.

Vedran Muhovic

President of Udruzenje za zastitu zivotinja LAJKA

Vedran’s childhood love for animals led him from software development to founding Friends of Sarajevo Strays. He oversees operations, ensuring every dog’s well-being.  His philosophy is clear: every animal rescued is his responsibility for life. Vedran believes in building bridges between animal lovers and skeptics, fostering a community where animals are treated with respect and love.  For Vedran, every wagging tail is a reminder of why this mission matters.

Dajna Preldžić

Veterinary Internist & Instagram Manager

Born in Zavidovići, Dajna’s gentle spirit and dedication to animals shine through in everything she does. One of Bosnia’s leading veterinary internists, has been volunteering with FOSS for over three years, providing top medical care and sharing heartwarming rescue stories on Instagram.

Šejla Delić

Volunteer & Photographer

Šejla has been part of Friends of Sarajevo Strays since she was 18. With a background in pediatrics and years of experience caring for the elderly and disabled, her nurturing nature extends to animals as well. Her calming energy comforts both people and animals, and her photography skills bring our rescues to life on Instagram.

Debbie Leuthold

Volunteer & Rehoming Assistant

From Germany, Debbie has been a dedicated supporter of FOSS since moving to Bosnia in 2018 for work. Time and again, she has come across abandoned puppies, on the streets, in the mountains, or among ruins, and couldn’t bear to leave them behind. Thanks to her tireless efforts, more than 20 dogs from FOSS have found loving homes, in Germany and across Europe, who now spend their winters indoors, curled up in their own warm beds: safe, loved, and finally home.

Mirjana Fajković

Volunteer and Facebook Group Manager

Mirjana volunteers at FOSS driven by her desire to improve the lives of shelter dogs. Mirjana brings a compassionate and thoughtful approach to her work. She manages Public Relations and Facebook for FOSS, connecting with supporters and sharing updates about our rescues. Mirjana has three rescue dogs of her own and believes in the power of love and care for all living beings.

Teodora Senić

Volunteer and Social Media Assistant

From Montenegro, Teodora is a veterinary student in Sarajevo. Her love for animals has been a lifelong passion, and volunteering at Friends of Sarajevo Strays keeps her connected to her purpose, where she helps with Instagram content and brings her musical talents to the shelter, creating a joyful atmosphere for our dogs.
